When the Lord first established His covenant with Abram, He was clear that the Covenant was for Abram, his children, and his descendants. God’s promise was to protect and provide for Abram, his children and his descendants. Years later, when the nation of Israel was about to move into the Promised Land, the Lord again made clear that the blessings of the Covenant was generational. The Lord desires for us to be blessed generation after generation.
Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth. (NIV)
The Lord was preparing the people to go into the Promised Land and He clearly desires that this nation be blessed for as many days as the Heavens are above the Earth. Do you know how many days the Heavens will be above the Earth? It’s not a trick question. The answer is every day. God wanted the nation of Israel to enjoy living in the land of blessing forever and ever. God wants us to live in blessing and He wants His children to live in blessing. Can we say “Praise the Lord” that we have a God who desires to bless us. He wants to release power from Heaven to make our life better in some way. Can I get an amen in the house!?!
A blessing is a release of supernatural power for good released from Heaven. A curse is the opposite. It is supernatural power working for destruction against us. The Scripture says that the Lord has set before us each day both blessings and curses. If we obey Him, we will be blessed and if we don’t, we lose some of His protection and we will find ourselves under a curse. But in this passage, God is telling the people to teach their children His laws and decrees and if they teach their children, it will ensure that their children remain in the blessing for generations. The teaching of our children is not supernatural. We are using human words and human understanding. But the Lord is telling the people that if they will teach their children, He will keep them in blessings. When we teach our children the ways of the Lord, the Lord will release power for their good. I think I want to say this again just for those in the back row. God honors us when we teach our children about Him by pouring blessings out to our children, and their children.
The Lord is not calling for a classroom education. He is advocating here for a teaching lifestyle. Certainly, as parents, we are called to teach our children the ways of God, but we are to teach as we live life. Teaching in the midst of life situations means to use the situations that we are in as examples of certain principles for living that God has given to us. Imagine teaching your children to obey the speed limit by pointing out cars that are going way too fast while you are driving as a reason for adhering to the speed limit. Our children would see how that car is not only putting itself at risk, but those around them as well. This is much more effective. Of course, it is going to create much more accountability. Once a child understands the danger of disobeying the speed limit, you know they are going to be watching how fast you are driving. “Daddy, the speed limit is not 90mph.” When we maintain a teaching lifestyle with our children, it forces us to obey the Lord more closely. And what was the promise for obeying the Lord? Oh yeah…blessings!
The Lord has tapped into our natural desire to see our children do better, be more, excel, and succeed. His promise to parents is that if we will live our life in a way that teaches our children the ways of God, He will release power to keep us in blessings and power to keep our children blessed, and their children, and their children, and …I think you get the point. When we live to ensure the supernatural blessings of God in the lives of our children, everyone gets blessed. So, are you living a life that abides by the teachings of the Lord? Are you living a life that reveals the ways of God to our children? If so, the Lord will not only bless them, but you as well. And if they do the same for their children, as they learned from you, the cycle of blessings will go on and on and on. To God be the glory!
